White Paper: Smart Networked Objects and Internet of Things

The white paper is presented by the Carnot Institutes’ Information Communication Technologies and Micro Nano Technologies alliance (ICT-MNT)

The white paper focuses on technologies and architectures used to interface between the real world and the different interconnected sensors on the network. It is structured according to the different application scenarios envisaged by those involved in the industry to give expected specifications and representative implementations.

It encourages a significant integration effort for application platforms in the following areas:

  • City-scale infrastructures,
  • Mobile services,
  • Mass distribution,
  • Transport and aeronautics,
  • Intelligent housing.

The principal challenges identified are grouped into three main themes:

  • The design and integration of things / smart objects,
  • The networking of objects / flexible and secure systems,
  • Service management.

About the Carnot Institutes network

The Carnot Institutes network, led by the Association of Carnot Institutes, comprises a network of 33 institutes with 13,000 research professionals who are involved in promoting the transfer of technologies and developing research partnerships with companies while guaranteeing a commitment to listening and professionalism.

The Carnot Institutes are organised into sector-based alliances to exploit their strong interactions and develop synergies so that they can offer companies a more comprehensive R&D solution which fully meets their requirements.

About the Carnot Institute’s ICT and Micro Nano Technologies alliance (ICT-MNT)

Created in 2008, the Carnot ICT-MNT Alliance unites the 20 Carnot Institutes with an interest in the field of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and Micro and Nano Technologies (MNT). The alliance covers all the subject’s scientific fields and mobilises unique resources in terms of research potential both in Europe and worldwide, and across many sectors (for example, CMOS technology, the design and architecture of chips, low-layer technologies, communication technologies, signal processing, systems security, complex systems and networks…).

The Carnot ICT-MNT Alliance combines the Carnot organisations’ multidisciplinary expertise in software and hardware.  This grouping is essential if we are to meet the major technological challenges of the future and is the opportunity to respond in a structured and concerted way to an identified industrial demand. It is one of the field’s key operational research strengths.
